Funicular of Montmartre
The Funicular de Montmartre is a kind of tram that connects the lower part of the Montmartre neighborhood with its upper part, where the Sacred Heart Basilica and the Place du Tertre are located.
The Funicular de Montmartre began operating in the summer of 1900. Since its inauguration it has been rebuilt and remodeled several times, the last one on June 1, 1991.
Currently the funicular is electric and transports more than 2 million passengers every year. The journey lasts just over a minute and is fully automated, as the vehicles lack drivers.
As curiosity, in its beginnings the funicular was hydraulically driven using a system of cisterns that were filled and emptied according to the load of passengers.
Schedules
The Funicular de Montmartre is in operation from 6:00 a.m. to 00:45 p.m. Because the ticket office closes at night, it is best to bring the tickets purchased in advance.
